August, 1998.
The Cedar Lodge is a genuine logger's and sportsman's tavern. While
another favorite local watering hole on the outskirts of
Parishville—the Timber Tavern—has
a woodsy ambience, the Cedar Lodge is actually situated in
the woods. A mountain, and several miles of rolling and twisting roads distance
it from Parishville. A leisurely ride through several miles of wooded Adirondack
foothill country along the Joe Indian Rd. is sure to stimulate one's appetite
for a hearty meal prepared by Sally, the bar's proprietor. From Parishville
the trip only takes fifteen minutes by car, sixteen by logging truck (the
mountain).
The Cedar Lodge features homestyle cooking, a full bar, pool table,
shuffleboard table, and all the gossip, yarns, tall tales, and fish stories
you care to hear. Sally's husband Charlie, a semi-permanent fixture at the
bar, may offer a passing motorist or hunter a fish story or two, though he's
really a quiet sort with a deadpan sense of humor. A canny poker player,
he's probably sizing up his next victim at the poker game over at Dominick's
camp. Sally you want to watch out for, too. She's fiesty, and doesn't put
up with shenanigans by the drunk and disorderly. Just the Drunk. But Sally
and Charlie are really as friendly a couple as you'll ever meet.
Whether you're a sportsman, a nature admirer, a logger, or just out
for a Sunday afternoon drive, be sure to stop into the Cedar Lodge
and chew the fat (and drink a beer) with Sally and Charlie, and their
good-looking daughter.
(The Cedar Lodge is now under
new ownership, and maintains the tradition of a great sportsman's bar, with
great food and a friendly atmosphere.)
