Typical Oakwood scene

..

.

This 30" diameter white oak had a 20" column of decay.  Using
a special formula to determine strength loss, the percentage loss
in strength in this particular tree due to the interior decay is 29%.
The strength loss threshold used by some arborists is 33%, thus
this tree would not be considered a hazard, indicating the
tremendous wind force that must have occurred to snap its trunk.

William H. Harlow, Author of
Textbook of Dendrology, is buried
under this dawn redwood tree,
which, as you can see, survived
the storm without injury.  Dr.Harlow
is also author of
Trees of the
Eastern and Central United States
and Canada, and Fruit Key and
Twig Key to Trees and Shrubs.  Both
books are excellent tree ID guides.
